Allied Health Professional FAQs

Med Travelers' allied healthcare professionals can earn excellent money, receive outstanding benefits, build a solid résumé and live in a U.S. location of their choice while working at a prestigious hospital or other top facility. It's your career, so it's your choice. You can even "travel" locally, in your own hometown.

This FAQs page is designed to answer common questions and help you explore new opportunities with the nation's leading allied health program for travelers. Do not hesitate to contact Med Travelers for further information. Our staffing professionals are standing by.

Working with Med Travelers

Med Travelers sounds like the right company for me. How do I start?

First, fill out a Med Travelers application and a skills checklist specific for your specialty. Our recruiters will evaluate your qualifications and contact you by phone to match you with assignments that complement your allied health training.

Are there minimum qualifications?

To be assigned by Med Travelers, you must be a graduate of a U.S. accredited allied healthcare program, hold a valid professional practice license or certification and present proof of the right to work in the United States.

Which allied health professionals are employed by Med Travelers?

We place many therapy professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, speech and language pathologists and radiation therapists. Med Travelers also places various imaging professionals, including radiologic technologists, nuclear medicine technologists, MRI technologists, CT technologists, ultrasound technicians, cardiovascular technologists and polysomnography technologists.

By applying, am I committing to take assignments?

No. A processed application means you can start searching exciting assignments. Commit to an assignment only when you're ready to travel.

How long is my commitment to Med Travelers?

Your commitment is equal to the length of the assignment you agree to take.

How much do you charge?

Our staffing service is free to you. Our services are paid for by our client healthcare facilities.

Pay and Benefits

Do you offer benefits and bonuses?

Med Travelers' allied health professionals are among the most highly compensated travelers in the industry. All travelers receive our benefits package and certain positions offer outstanding bonuses and incentives.

When does my medical insurance take effect?

Beginning on 1/1/08, Med Travelers will be offering Day One Coverage medical insurance to travelers starting new assignments.

How much does Med Travelers pay?

Our travelers are among the most satisfied in the industry. Pay rates are always competitive and vary by assignment, specialty and experience. Talk to your recruiter for details.

What is your payment process?

Most of our allied health professionals are paid directly from our payroll department. A few facilities do pay our travelers directly. For your convenience, we provide compensation via direct deposit or overnight mail each week.

Do you offer referral bonuses?

Yes. You can receive a referral bonus – $500 for therapy specialties and $200 for imaging professionals – for referring candidates to Med Travelers. Once your referral completes a
13-week assignment, you will be eligible for the bonus. More travelers come to us through referrals from friends and colleagues than from any other source.

Job Assignments

How long are travel assignments?

Most assignments are eight weeks or 13 weeks, but we always try to customize the length of an assignment to meet your needs.

Can I be assigned in my hometown?

Yes. Some of the hospitals we staff hire local healthcare professionals. Your recruiter will know if you're eligible for local travel.

What types of assignments do you offer?

As a leading temporary staffing company, Med Travelers, a division of AMN Healthcare, has some of the most sought-after allied health opportunities available across the country. Thanks to our affiliation with AMN Healthcare, we have access to the most assignments. Let us help you find specific assignment you desire, whether in a prestigious teaching hospital or a rehab facility, in a major city or a rural setting. We have available positions in almost all allied health programs, specialties and shifts.

All things considered, how long before I can start an assignment?

This depends how quickly you want to begin. Having your application completed speeds things up considerably. You could start your first assignment within one week, or four to six weeks. To learn more about assignments that are currently available, apply today!

Will a Med Travelers professional help me choose an assignment?

Upon acceptance of your application and skills checklist, a professional personal recruiter is assigned to you. With years of experience in healthcare staffing and in matching qualified healthcare professionals to the right assignment, our recruiters assist you in every aspect of your search for the perfect assignment. Together, you choose the assignment that's right for you.

What are the chances I'll get the assignment I want?

Your chances are excellent. Even if we don't have your specific position in the location of your choice, we'll contact facilities in that area, present your credentials and search for assignments. We're not happy until you are.

I chose an assignment. Now what?

Your credentials, along with your selected start date, are sent to our client, the facility you've chosen. They, in turn, review your application and interview you via telephone. Your recruiter will prepare you for every step of the way.

When does my travel commitment begin?

Following the interview, you and the facility will determine if you're the right fit for the assignment. Your commitment begins only if and when you decide to accept the assignment.

Is there a minimum commitment duration?

No. You only commit to the length of the assignment you choose.

How should I prepare for my assignment?

Once you commit to an assignment, you will receive a confirmation package in the mail with all pertinent information about your assignment. Your recruiter will then work with you to prepare you for your assignment.

Will you inform me of the state licensing requirements for my assignment?

Your recruiter will inform you about the specific licensing requirements in the state of your assignment. For more information, visit our medical licensure page. We're here to assist you and make this part of the process easy.

How do I get to my assignment?

Med Travelers recommends that, if traveling away from home, you should drive to your assignment. This gives you the freedom to explore a new area on your off days. If you accept an assignment in a major city, such as New York city, where parking is scarce and public transportation is readily available, consider leaving your car at home. Med Travelers reimburses the travel expenses to your assignment regardless of how you choose to get there.

Can I bring along a friend?

Absolutely. Share this journey by traveling with a colleague, spouse or close friend.

Housing

How does housing work?

The Med Travelers housing department qualifies only the most reputable housing properties. You receive free deluxe, private accommodations in secure, attractive surroundings, usually located close to your assignment. Each furnished unit will be move-in condition upon your arrival, complete with housewares and utilities. Most properties feature luxurious amenities, such as pools, fitness centers and tennis courts.

Did you just say housing is free?

Yes. Med Travelers provides its temporary professionals free deluxe, private housing. Unlike other staffing companies that only offer shared housing, or charge for private accommodations, our Housing Account Executives secure for you furnished, private housing in a neighborhood close to your facility.

I don't need company housing. Do you offer an allowance?

Yes. If you arrange and pay for your own housing, you will receive a monthly housing stipend or subsidy. The subsidy varies by position and assignment location.
